The Akua Benjamin Legacy Project focuses on anti-Black racism and resistance, it seeks to promote the kind of educational work and activism that builds a just, inclusive community and society. It reflects on and instills pride in some of the significant contributions by five notable black Canadians.

  • Book Of Love: Gone but not forgotten, Gwen and Lenny Johnson’s store, Third World Books and Crafts was the epicentre of black consciousness in Toronto from 1968 to 2000. 
  • Where is Marlene Greene? The late Marlene Greene left a legacy in education which is hard to match today. 
  • Dudley Speaks for Me: Dudley Laws spoke for many in the black community in Toronto but he paid a price. Do you know Dudley Laws’ story? 
  • Rosie, The Fearless Rebel: Rosie Douglas was a great leader in Toronto’s anti-black racism movement. Do you know the legacy he left behind? 
  • Charley: Charles Roach was inspired by Martin Luther King to become a civil rights lawyer and activist. His legacy in the legal profession lives on through young lawyers.
