“This is a very exciting opportunity,” exclaims Harper. “We have recently moved our base to New York City and are very happy to start the new year this way.” Of Trinidadian descent, having been born and raised in Southern California, Director/Producer Charysse Tia Harper, founded Xplore the World in 2010, which focuses on social and cultural documentaries. In 2013, the company relocated to London while working on Panomundo, a two-part documentary about the history of the steelpan and its influence in seven countries, along with UK-production company, Komonopromo.
Xplore the World’s first documentary was “The Other Side of Carnival” (2010), which won Best Cultural Documentary and Best International Documentary Short. Other documentaries include award-winning “12 Months” (2014), about a man who rents his home for $1 per month to a woman and her four children for a year and “Not In Our Culture” (2015), a 12-part Nigerian mini-series that celebrates and criticizes traditional aspects, such as inter-tribal marriages. The latter is a co-production with Enddy Visuals, Ltd. Along with Panomundo, another project with Komonopromo include “T&T 50 in Fifteen” (2012), a commemoration of important events that have occurred in the 50 years of Trinidad & Tobago’s independence.
“This screening is more of an exhibition for the community to know who we are, as well as for us to know them,” states Harper. Xplore the World documentary film screenings will be held at Newark Public Library (Auditorium, 4th Floor), 5 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102:
